The honest answer is: it depends on what the website actually needs to do — and most quotes vary because they're pricing different things.
A simple marketing website — a handful of pages, no backend, no custom functionality — costs the least because there's little to engineer beyond design and content.
A website with a content system, forms that need to store data, or an admin area to manage that content moves into web application territory, which costs more because it needs a database, an API layer and testing beyond visual design.
A fully custom platform — bookings, payments, multi-user accounts, dashboards — costs the most because it's effectively custom software wearing a website's interface.
The most useful question to ask a development company isn't "how much for a website" but "what does this website need to actually do for my business" — that's what determines the real number.
